As the summer nears and we're counting down till summer break; try out some of these counting and other fun activities.
• Count together, alternate so each of you says every other number. To add a "twist" make this a physical activity by throwing or bouncing a ball every time you say a number.
• Try counting to 10 and as your friend counts, you jump and make a sound. Let them know they "control" how fast you jump depending on how quickly or slowly they decide to count. This shows them how to follow and give instructions while staying in control of their own choices.
• Play pretend and help them imagine they are a rocket ship. Pick them up, do a count down 3,2,1… and for "blast-off" "blast" them onto a soft pillow covered bed. Super Heros are another good pretending activity. Make up a story line together and help them pretend to be invincible.
• Play a directions game - you pick them up and put them down as you say "up" and "down". Then, spin them around and call out other directions and motions as you do them. Then have them name the directions by repeating after you you.
• When doing a puzzle or matching game and they don't seem to be interested try putting the pieces in the wrong place. This challenges them and gets them involved because they sense that the pieces don't belong there.
• Even if acting silly is what makes your friend giggle, make it into a game by dressing up and being silly together!
